struggles and triumphs in reading

Tonight at the dinner table (just Dad and the girls) we listened to a record that had Mom's high school choir from LMH. They sang a song called Hospodi Pomilul (Russian?). You should have heard Mom and Joy trying to pronounce that!

While on the topic of pronunciation, reading and such, our conversation drifted to how far Vinson has come with his learning disability (dyslexia) since elementary school. Nobody would really even know he had/has it; he is quite the reader today. My mom and Vinson both went through so much for so many years of his schooling, and it's amazing to see how far God has taken him. Mom commented on how she never would have believed that he would be in college and awarded with a spot in The International Economics Honor Society (Omicron Delta Epsilon). I seriously had forgotten about those home school days of prolonged excruciating labor that Vinson and Mom would go through, and it was so cool how she brought it up. It really does show God's powerful grace.

Soccer

Fire

This past Saturday there was a fire at our Amish neighbor's house. Apparently it started from their stove and reached the ceiling, but it wasn't too serious and nobody was hurt. I guess they are near two fire department "territories," so maybe that explains why 9 fire engines came. It drew the neighbors out to have so many sirens, to say the least.

I took a few shots from a distance with my dad's zoom lense. I didn't want to be an annoying news hungry photographer, so I didn't get too close. I got what looked like a good shot, framed by Joy and Margaret walking down the street and out of focus with the road behind them filled with 5 or so fire engines. I was looking forward to seeing it on my computer screen to see how it turned out, and what did I see when I went for the memory card? Nothing! I was quite disappointed. Why the camera acted normal and showed the shots after I took them, I do not know. I sacrificed my self image and it wasn't kind enough to give me a return! That deceptive little thing, trying to teach me a lesson. :-) My dad has since changed the setting, which is nice of him.

Melanie Millen sent us photos that she took, and I actually got a shot of one of the last engines driving away.

You can see that they had two ladders extended to the roof. I think they'd be ok with just 3 fire engines and not the 5 extra along the road, but I guess better safe than sorry.

At Aunt Cheryls

Karla and I are down at Cheryl's in Charlotte NC. We are here to bring Mom and Dad Landis home from their two week visit with Cheryl. I did not bring my camera so we have no pictures... We drove all day Friday to get here. Just for the record, we did make it to KFC in time for the Buffet! I'm a happy man. Karla said we will eat at a more healthful place coming home:) We had a relaxing evening at Cheryls Friday night. Saturday we slept in and had a cholesterol filled breakfast. Yum! Then I worked on Cheryl's "To Do List". Just a couple minor repairs. It is now 12:30 and we are figuring out what to do the rest of the day. My vote is to just relax and do nothing. Others have a different idea of what the word "relax" abd "nothing" means though... We'll see what happens :) I've got to go help move a dresser into the living room now so that's it for this post.

What we did on Easter...

Well, we went to Church, came home, and ate Easter Ham! -sorry Dr. Tierney:(, made our traditional “Redemption Cake”. We all took a nap. Then I (dad) took pictures of flowers, Joy and Margaret shot some hoops and played ping-pong. The boys sat like couch potatoes playing video games… Most of us tossed a Frisbee and hit some tennis balls. Dad and Margaret and Sarah took Sarah’s car to the garage. Then we visited Buffy- poor dog is so lonely….Then we came home and talked. Great day!

Early Easter

Our family enjoys making Easter eggs and hunting for them at Grandma Landis’. We have done this for 23 years. This year we celebrated Easter a week early because Aunt Cheryl was home from Charlotte NC. The memories of our young children searching for and finding cleverly hidden Easter treasures will always bring a smile to my face. Although the kids are older now they still enjoy the day. Decorating and coloring the eggs then waiting while the parents hide them before going out to hunt for the treasures. Somehow the ones with quarters in them seem to have become more valuable now than 15 years ago…! We still have the challenge of keeping the dog from getting to the treats before the kids find them. This year Grandpa Landis has a new toy. His Zero Turn Radius Mower. Joy was taking a test drive. I think she was having fun… Grandma and Grandpa Landis always make Christ’s death and resurrection an important part of the day. Because of His perfect sacrifice we can stand clean before the Lord!
